Checkmate Tournament's Summer Program

Program Details:

To keep kids active during the summer, Checkmate Tournaments is now offering a summer camp for kids ages 6-12. This program will focus on three areas of study: math, chess, and anatomy; and will taught in a fun and interactive way. This camp will take place on the corner of Serene and Tamarus near Silverado High School. This is a one week program that goes from July 12 to July 16 from 10am to 2pm each day.

The day will start off with games tailored to reinforce concepts in mathematics. These games with focus on addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division with students only playing the games that they are old enough to handle. This has proven to be an effective method of allowing students to reinforce the concepts they already know, build a better understanding of core concepts, and move students to higher concepts at an accelerated rate. The kids enjoy learning because it has been changed from a boring repetitive task to a fun and competitive game.

After about an hour of math games the students will take a small break and have a snack so that they can prepare for the next subject of anatomy. Instead of sitting down and taking notes while getting a lecture, students digging into various props as they get a hands on approach to anatomy. As this is not my area of expertise I have inlisted the help of Joan Brown with Creating Conscious Kids to aid in the teaching of this material. For more information about her program you can check out her website at Creating Conscious Kids.

Afterwards we will take another break so that the kids will get a chance to eat lunch. The exact menu is still being decided, but it will likely be some sandwiches or something equally healthy. After we are done eating we will begin with the chess portion of the camp where the kids will get to play each other while I give individual lessons to the students.

The costs for this program will be $160 for the week and will include everything including food, materials, and 4 hours of fun and interactive learning. If you have any questions please feel free to call Brett at 339-6821 or email him at .
